  • Catalog Number 21-023-CM

Corning HBSS (Hanks' Balanced Salt Solution) — a physiological buffer for maintaining cells during short-term handling, rinsing, and transport procedures. 1X concentration, without calcium, magnesium, or phenol red. Each pack contains six 1L bottles.

HBSS is commonly used for washing cells prior to dissociation, diluting cell suspensions for counting, rinsing tissue samples during dissection, and as a transport medium for tissue specimens. The calcium/magnesium-free formulation is preferred when enzymatic dissociation with trypsin or collagenase is planned.

PBS (Phosphate Buffered Saline) is a balanced isotonic salt solution at pH 7.4, commonly used for cell washing, reagent dilution, and immunohistochemistry protocols. RPMI 1640 is a widely used growth medium for lymphocytes, hybridomas, and suspension cultures — available with L-glutamine and phenol red. HBSS (Hanks' Balanced Salt Solution) maintains cells during short-term handling, rinsing, and transport at physiological pH.

Frequently Asked Questions

PBS without calcium and magnesium (Ca²⁺/Mg²⁺-free) is used for cell washing and detachment protocols where divalent cations would inhibit trypsin or EDTA activity. PBS with calcium and magnesium is used when maintaining cell adhesion is desired, such as during immunostaining or live cell imaging.

Store RPMI 1640 at 2–8°C (refrigerated) and protect from light. The medium contains phenol red as a pH indicator — if the color shifts from red-orange to yellow or purple, the pH has changed and the medium should be discarded. Unopened shelf life is printed on each bottle.

Yes. RPMI 1640 is typically supplemented with 10% FBS and 1% Penicillin-Streptomycin for standard cell culture. PBS and HBSS are used as wash buffers and do not require supplementation. We carry a full range of Fetal Bovine Serum products for media supplementation.
