Find the Right FBS Lot for Your Cells

Lot-to-lot variability is the single biggest source of inconsistency in cell culture experiments. Every FBS lot has a unique profile of growth factors, hormones, and proteins that affects how your specific cells behave. A lot that works perfectly for HeLa may underperform for primary neurons.

Lot Reservation: Found a lot that works? We'll reserve it for up to 5 years so you never worry about lot-to-lot variability disrupting your experiments.

Our lot matching service helps you find the FBS lot that best matches your current serum — whether you are switching suppliers, your current lot is running out, or you need to find a replacement after a discontinued product.

How It Works

  1. Send us your current COA. Email the Certificate of Analysis from your current FBS (any supplier — Gibco, Sigma, Atlas, whoever) to orders@innovativebiosci.com.

  2. We match key parameters. We compare your current lot's endotoxin, hemoglobin, total protein, osmolality, and growth promotion data against the lots in our current inventory.

  3. You receive a recommendation within 24-48 hours. We will identify the closest-matching lot(s) and explain the comparison data.

  4. Test with a lot-specific COA. We will include a 50mL bottle of the recommended lot so you can run a side-by-side comparison in your own culture system.

  5. Reserve your lot. Once you confirm the lot works, we will reserve additional bottles for your lab — up to 12 months.

Why Lot Matching Matters

The cost of using the wrong FBS lot is not just poor cell growth — it is lost time and wasted resources:

  • One cancer research lab reported being stalled for several months due to sequential bad FBS lots, with losses exceeding $45,000 in personnel and consumables
  • A researcher switching FBS sources saw cell growth drop from subculturing every 2-3 days to every 8-10 days, with visible morphological changes
  • Labs that buy 50-100 bottles at a time routinely test 3+ lots before committing — because the cost of a bad lot far exceeds the cost of evaluation

Lot matching reduces the risk of these outcomes by starting your evaluation with the lot most likely to match your cells' requirements.

What We Match

Parameter Why It Matters
Endotoxin (EU/mL) High endotoxin activates macrophages, interferes with immunological assays
Hemoglobin (mg/dL) Indicates collection quality; lower is better
Total Protein (mg/mL) Reflects overall serum composition and fetal maturity
IgG (mg/mL) Should be low in genuine fetal serum; high values suggest adulteration
Osmolality (mOsm/kg) Should be in physiological range for optimal cell performance
Growth Promotion Relative growth promotion on reference cell lines
